Maclane Mission Statement

I spent a fare few hours driving back and forth between Newcastle and Sydney and this gives me ample time to listen to audio training programs and also ample time to think and reflect.

I have been listening to David Allen a lot lately and his audio program “Getting Things Done Fast”. It is an epic training course and it has revolutionised the ways I remember things and plan my to dos.

David Allen talks about the different planes of life. The runway (action points), 10,000ft (active projects), 20,000ft (job description), 30,000 (next 1-2 yrs), 40,000ft (next 5-10 yrs) and 50,000ft (overall life purpose).

At the moment my world is completely focused on the runway and 10,000ft. Not even in the area of my side business but in the area of my employment. I have just moved into a new role and it is taking me a bit to get my head around everything and get up to date on all my stuff.

However, on these long drives (when I cannot do any work) I have had time to think about MacLane, the media business I want to start up. I have been thinking about where I want to take the company and what I want it to look like in 10 years if anything were possible. I wanted to define great success.

I started thinking over goals and standards that we live by as a company. For example I want to promote free access to information, but don’t want to promote information that may have a negative impact on people’s lives (eg. A blog on how to hate people). I also had to think about whether I wanted to be 100% ‘christian’ or 100% focused on big life impacting things (eg. Personal development, family, spirituality) or could I broaden my span to fit other things I enjoy (eg. Movie reviews, book reviews etc).

In the end the below mission statement/mantra is what I was able to come up with.

I stole some of it from Mylan Global.

Our goal is to provide the world’s 7 billion people with affordable and easy access to quality information that helps them make informed decisions that will improve the lives of themselves and other.

This mission statement allows me to encorporate things like my movie review site, but it is also very narrow in that the information I produce has to work towards providing people with information that helps them to make positive informed decisions. This excludes all sorts of media that I could get myself involved in.

I set a BHAG with the goal to reach the world’s 7 billion people. This means I will need to use the internet and other forms of media. I can also use other forms of expression apart from writing (video, seminars, training classes).

I like my mission statement and although I don’t plan to leave my job and start this business today this mission statement will remain in the back of my mind and slowly become a mantra and hopefully a reality one day.

Better Time Management

20120401-215604.jpg

Time is more valuable than money, wherever you can buy time.

Much has happened since my previous update. The biggest development in my life has been a job promotion and a relocation.

I have been promoted from predominately phone sales to predominately face to face sales and I couldn’t be more excited. I love face to face about 10 (or 100) times better than on the phone…the money is better too (so is the responsibility).

Me, my wife and kids are also relocating up to Newcastle next week for me to start the new role.

One of the things that has become severely obviously to me in the last 2 months is my need for better time management and admin skills.

To improve these skills I have already been listening to audio tapes on time management, productivity and goal setting and I am about to consume the best audio books on these subjects.

Better time management will mean I can get more done in less time. It means more time with the family and less stress. It also means that I will learn and grow quicker as I will be using my time more productively.

So far I am just uniquely aware of my need to learn more about this subject and I have the goal of being able to finish all my work for the day by 5:30pm 4 days per week. This may not always happen but it will keep me focused to help me be more productive.

Stay tuned for more updates

Ps the photo: I used this photo because good time management meaning I can spend more time juggling the kids (literally) and less time juggling other tasks.

Launched A New Website About Young Dads

20111217-182344.jpg

Wednesday last week I decided to launch a new website. It is all about how to be a young dad.

Why I Started This Site

I started this site mainly because I was beginning to get frustrated with the growth of CashFlow Investor. Not so much frustrated, but more worried about the commercial opportunity as a part time business.

CFI has a LOT of commercial opportunity and it is doing relatively well. However, it is a smaller market and extremely competitive.

As a full time business I know it would be extremely profitable and that is why I am going to continue growing it. But as I currently work full time I needed something that would grow well on a part time basis

What am I passionate about

I have been on a country trip for work for the last 3 days. I spent a lot of time driving and had a lot of time to think about what I am passionate about.

I wanted something that I knew a bit about, something that I was passionate about and something that was niche enough to still be popular but not have ridiculous competition.

The only thing I could think of was being a dad, and more specifically being a young dad.

This is something that I am passionate about and I live and breathe it all day anyway, so why not run a website about it.

I love positive cash flow property, but I am neck deep in children at the moment, not in property. So it makes sense to do what I am doing

Keyword Research

Through keyword research I was also able to discover that my chosen niche has more traffic than positive cash flow property. Better yet I can also target the US market which is bigger than the Australian market.

I have a few keyword phrases that I am looking to target well for. But the world it my oyster in this niche because it is so wide I have the potential to rank well for so many different terms.

That is if I do it right AND if I create quality content that the average google user would love.

Started A Twitter Account For CFI

I recently started a twitter account for CashFlowInvestor.com.au (just a couple of days ago actually).

After the Google Panda update it is obvious that social media in now playing a huge role in search engine rankings. It is time that I started tapping into this for CFI and see how it can help build the blog and improve my search engine rankings.

There are many ways to build a large targeted twitter following but I am going to focus on the following techniques:

1. Deliver daily value through my tweets and grow organically through retweets and twitter search
2. Use my blog and email list to promote the twitter stream
3. Find people in my niche who already have solid followings and then poach their followers

As of yesterday I had one twitter follower. As I am writing this I have tripled my following to 3.

Look out twitter, here I come

A Day In The Life Of Ryan 2011

Here is what an average day is like in the life of Ryan in the latter part of 2011.

2:00am – Wake up to baby crying. Give Kelly encouragement as she gets up to feed the baby

6:00am – Wake up to baby crying and feed Branson.

6:30am – Put Branson in his chair and have a shower

7:00am – Leave home and skate to the train station. Spend the train ride writing for CashFlowInvestor.com.au

8:15am – Arrive at work

8:30am-5:00pm – Work hard at my job. Calling pharmacies and helping them increase their income with Alphapharm products

5:00pm – Walk to train station. Push past as many people as possible to make sure I get a seat. Try to write on the train for an hour but usually stuff around for 30 minutes

6:40pm – Arrive home. Give Sasha dinner and bath and put her to bed. Then have dinner myself

7:45pm – Chill out with wife…maybe watch some TV.

9:00pm – Feed Branson and give him a bath

11:00pm – Get in to bed and hopefully get to sleep

That is an average day for me in the latter part of 2011. It isn’t incredibly inspiring but I love my life

Doing The Google Dance

At the end of November my site CashFlowInvestor.com.au started ranking well and getting good search engine traffic.

At the start of December my search engine traffic halved. Seems my site is currently doing the google dance. Going up and down, up and down the search engine rankings.

Lucky I have a long term goal AND lucky I capture my traffic so I can grow my site despite what Google thinks of me at any given time.

What Happens When You Stop Focusing On Traffic

I have been working pretty hard on my site CashFlowInvestor.com.au and for the last half of the year I have been focused solely on traffic generation…specifically search engine traffic.

I set myself the goal of achieve 1,000 visitors from the search engines in one calendar month and I decided I wouldn’t focus on anything else until I achieved that.

So you could say I have been very focused on traffic generation.

But in saying that, I am looking forward to the day when I don’t even think about traffic generation. Instead I just focus on delivering quality to my readers…then traffic will grow naturally anyway.

I guess that will only happen if I earn enough that I don’t need any more traffic.

Or maybe it will never happen and it’s just a pipe dream

What One Good Post Can Do

I wrote yesterday about how I want to focus on writing one good post per week. Not 5-10 mediocre posts.

Let’s look at the power if one post:

http://www.ryanmclean.net/best-movie-speeches-of-all-time-top-15-inspirational-movie-speeching/

This post delivers around 100 visitors per day, or over 3,000 visitors per week to my site.

Why?

Because it is an amazing post. It delivers value and gives the reader exactly what they want.

If only I had 10 of these on CashFlow Investor…add that to the to do list

One Good Post

I would rather create one good post per week than work my ass off to produce a post or two per day that are mediocre.

One good post that you can link back to and draw traffic to over and over is worth it’s weight in gold, especially if it contains an affiliate link or a link that makes you money.

You don’t create a great site with mediocre content, and I want to create a great site. It will just take me a bit longer :(
