I spent a fare few hours driving back and forth between Newcastle and Sydney and this gives me ample time to listen to audio training programs and also ample time to think and reflect.
I have been listening to David Allen a lot lately and his audio program “Getting Things Done Fast”. It is an epic training course and it has revolutionised the ways I remember things and plan my to dos.
David Allen talks about the different planes of life. The runway (action points), 10,000ft (active projects), 20,000ft (job description), 30,000 (next 1-2 yrs), 40,000ft (next 5-10 yrs) and 50,000ft (overall life purpose).
At the moment my world is completely focused on the runway and 10,000ft. Not even in the area of my side business but in the area of my employment. I have just moved into a new role and it is taking me a bit to get my head around everything and get up to date on all my stuff.
However, on these long drives (when I cannot do any work) I have had time to think about MacLane, the media business I want to start up. I have been thinking about where I want to take the company and what I want it to look like in 10 years if anything were possible. I wanted to define great success.
I started thinking over goals and standards that we live by as a company. For example I want to promote free access to information, but don’t want to promote information that may have a negative impact on people’s lives (eg. A blog on how to hate people). I also had to think about whether I wanted to be 100% ‘christian’ or 100% focused on big life impacting things (eg. Personal development, family, spirituality) or could I broaden my span to fit other things I enjoy (eg. Movie reviews, book reviews etc).
In the end the below mission statement/mantra is what I was able to come up with.
I stole some of it from Mylan Global.
Our goal is to provide the world’s 7 billion people with affordable and easy access to quality information that helps them make informed decisions that will improve the lives of themselves and other.
This mission statement allows me to encorporate things like my movie review site, but it is also very narrow in that the information I produce has to work towards providing people with information that helps them to make positive informed decisions. This excludes all sorts of media that I could get myself involved in.
I set a BHAG with the goal to reach the world’s 7 billion people. This means I will need to use the internet and other forms of media. I can also use other forms of expression apart from writing (video, seminars, training classes).
I like my mission statement and although I don’t plan to leave my job and start this business today this mission statement will remain in the back of my mind and slowly become a mantra and hopefully a reality one day.
